one day you two will reunite
Arthur shook his head no. “I am not scared of you, not at all. What do you plan on doing with me?”
Dev shrugged and pointed his toe forward, intending to step forward, but restricted himself from doing so. “What do you want me to do with you? Certainly, I’m not gonna leave you alone. There must be another option in that little head of yours,” he grinned.
“Nothing…” Arthur blushed lightly, shaking his head. “Fine, I’ll tell you…. I want to be tainted… But not here. Even to me, the church has some value. I don’t want to vandalize it by doing such a thing here.”
“You wanted to be tainted?” Dev snorted, but shrugged anyways. “Fine then. If not here, then where? And by all means, make it be somewhere comfortable,” he smirked at him, flicking his tail back and forth.
at least you cleared it out though. that’s the good thing.
ooh i knew it!
that’s good, that’s real good :3 ‘m proud of you, darlin
*stays quiet and hands him his glass of water*

Unbeknownst to the older people in the room, Matthew was awake, though barely. The little boy stayed hidden under the covers and bit his lip as he listened to Alfred and their mother talk. Why wouldn’t Alfred come with them…? He had to! What if… what if daddy got super scary, and he and mommy weren’t there to help him? Matthew whimpered quietly and shook his head a bit.
No! They all had to go to granny’s together! And… daddy wouldn’t follow them all the way up north! He had to work, and gosh knows he was practically married to his stupid job… Matthew bit his lip and pulled the blanket away from his eyes, watching Alfred and his mommy interact.
“Alfred, I really don’t want you to stay down here with your father alone.” Caroline looked up at her son with her light blue-purple eyes, tears forming at the edge of them. Alfred sighed and looked down at his shoes as she kept speaking. “What if… What if he hurt you?”
Alfred pointed to the bruise on his cheek.
“I meant really hurt you. As if… As if he almost killed you or something.”
“You know he won’t go that far.”
“You don’t know your father, Al.”
“And you don’t know your own husband, Caroline.”
They both stared at each other for a long time, not faltering. After a couple of minutes Alfred looked away, breaking their eye contact. “I know how to take care of myself, mom. I’m almost sixteen. I’ve dealt with him for three years now. I think I can deal with him for another two years before I turn eighteen.”
His mother stood up and walked towards him, lightly setting her hand on his shoulder. Alfred flinched at her touch, which caused her to remove her hand. “What about Matthew? He won’t want you to stay alone.”
“He needs to make new friends,” he said sadly, not meeting her eyes. “I’m not going to be there for him his whole life. I know he’s only five, but maybe this is a good time for him to learn how to be without me.”
“Alfred—”
He set his hands on his mother’s shoulders and spun her around, leading her towards her closet. “Pack up your things. I’m going to make sure that you leave soon before things get out of hand. I’ll pack up Matthew’s things tomorrow afternoon.”
His mother looked at him with sad eyes, silently pleading him to come with her, but she knew he wouldn’t. She leaned up and kissed him on the cheek, which Alfred allowed.
“You’re such a strong boy.”
Alfred looked over at Matthew and sighed. “Make sure he grows up to be a strong boy himself.”
